How to install an APK on Android
Use this guide to install a downloaded .apk file, including a Symfonium icon pack. Install it on the same Android device as Symfonium, then follow the icon-pack import guide to select it in the app.
Settings names vary by device manufacturer. Start with the normal installation steps below; use the developer-verification section only if Android shows that specific block.
Install the downloaded APK
- Download the APK from the customization's detail page.
- Open the completed download in your browser, or find it in your file manager's Downloads folder.
- If Android says this source cannot install apps, tap Settings in the prompt.
- Enable Allow from this source for the app opening the file, such as your browser or file manager.
- Return to the APK and tap Install. Follow the on-screen prompts until installation finishes.
You can also find this permission through Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Select the app opening the APK, rather than Symfonium. After installation, you can turn its installation permission off again. Google's instructions for installing apps from other sources.
If Android blocks an unverified developer
Android developer verification checks whether an app is registered to a developer whose identity Google has verified. A signed APK can still come from an unverified developer.
Checked 7 October 2026: Google's initial enforcement began on 30 September 2026 for participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Google's current FAQ says direct APK downloads and other stores are not covered by that initial phase; broader enforcement on certified Android devices is planned for 2027. Follow the message on your device rather than assuming every website download needs extra setup. Google's verification FAQ, rollout details.
If your device specifically blocks an app because its developer is unverified, Google provides a one-time advanced flow. Only proceed if you trust the app and are making this decision yourself. You can instead ask the uploader whether a registered version is available.
- Enable Developer options: find Build number in Settings > About phone and tap it seven times. On Samsung phones, it is usually under About phone > Software information. Google's device-specific instructions.
- Open Settings > System > Developer options and turn on Allow apps from unverified developers. Its location may differ on your device.
- Complete the on-device checks. These include confirming that nobody is coaching you, restarting the phone, and authenticating again.
- Wait for the 24-hour security delay. When it ends, return to the flow and confirm your identity with your device PIN or biometrics as prompted.
- Choose whether to allow these installations for seven days or indefinitely.
- Open the downloaded APK again. If the unverified-developer warning appears and you still trust the app, confirm with Install anyway.
The delay is part of the one-time setup, rather than a new wait for every APK. Permission for your browser or file manager to install APKs is still separate. Google's advanced-flow instructions, Google's explanation of the security checks.
Google says Developer options can be switched off after completing the setup. Where verification is enforced, later updates to an unregistered app also need the advanced flow enabled, or installation through ADB. Google's verification FAQ.
Other installation warnings
Google Play Protect may request a scan or flag an APK as potentially harmful. This is separate from developer identity verification. Keep Play Protect enabled; if it reports harmful behavior, stop and contact the uploader instead of treating the warning as a routine installation step. Google Play Protect help.
If your device has a manufacturer-specific block or is managed by an employer or school, check the manufacturer's guidance or contact the device administrator. The ordinary installation permission and the advanced flow do not override every device policy.
Advanced alternative: install from a computer
If you already use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), Google says ADB installs remain available for unregistered apps and are not subject to the advanced flow's 24-hour wait. Google's verification FAQ.
Install Google's SDK Platform Tools, enable USB debugging, and connect your device to your computer by USB. Unlock the device and authorize your own computer when prompted, then install the downloaded file with:
adb install "path/to/icon-pack.apk"
Replace the example path with your APK's location. See Google's ADB installation and connection guide for setup and troubleshooting.
